Update Motorola Droid 4 to Official Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OS

As you know, Verizon announced that the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update will be OTA released for the Motorola Droid 4 smartphones, but apparently only the test / beta version of the firmware is being available for now. Anyway, if you just can’t wait and want to try the Android 4.1.2 flavor on your Droid 4 as soon as possible, then you can choose to apply the present step by step guide, which will show you how to manually flash the official (still in test phase) Jelly Bean 4.1.2 software on your handset.
Even though this might not be that same variant of Jelly Bean that will be rolled out for your Droid 4, the ROM is stable and will smoothly run on your smartphone. Apparently those who have tested the firmware stated that there are no relevant bugs or issues so you can get the ROM for a daily usage too. The best part is that the installation procedure can be easily performed as we are dealing with the official update and not with a custom ROM, meaning that there are only a few things to take care before starting the flashing operation.
Now, by updating your Motorola Droid 4 to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS you will be able to get the latest apps and tools available for your handset along with the usual Jelly Bean features, looks and capabilities. Also, your phone will run faster, the performances will be improved and of course you will be enjoying a better Android experience.
As mentioned, you do have to apply the pre requisites first, or else the manual method will not work for you, or worst you can even end up in bricking your phone. And the first to begin with is the backup. Yes, unfortunately, even though you are about to apply the official Jelly Bean update, you still have to previously backup the Droid 4 data. You see, a wipe of the system will be required which means that all of your personal info will be erased; therefore take your time and save everything you need to.
Fortunately for you, the Droid 4 doesn’t have to be rooted for being able to apply the Android 4.1.2 firmware. Actually, the OS can be applied only if your handset is running the official and unmodified Android 4.1.1 firmware with system version 6.16.217. In order to ensure the same go to “settings -> about phone”. In case you have modified the stock ROM, then you will have to re-install the same first and then continue with this procedure. Now, if you have just rooted the stock software without making any other changes, then before heading to the update operation you need to apply the next tasks:
  • Go to Google Play store.
  • From there download the OTA RootKeeper tool (get it from here).
  • Install the app on your phone and run the same.
  • Tap on “Protect Root” for backing up the root status.
  • Next, tap on “Temp Unroot” for removing root access before updating the Droid 4 to official Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
  • Don’t worry as you will be able to restore the root access after flashing the firmware.
Because of the up mentioned facts, the warranty of your device will not get voided by completing this tutorial. Even though we are manually updating your phone, we are still dealing with the official OS, so you don’t have to worry about keeping or losing the warranty.
A Windows powered computer will have to be used; the same is applying for your handset and its USB cable. Also, in order to perform the next steps without dealing with unexpected problems first uninstall all the security tools that are running on both computer and Motorola Droid 4. Your phone might get turned off if its battery is not fully charged, so use the charger before going any further. Enable the USB debugging option on your device, or else you will not be able to properly connect the same with the PC.
The present guide is compatible only with the Motorola Droid 4 model number XT894. Do not try the procedure for a similar device because you will risk in bricking the same. Be aware as this operation is being considered risky and complex so try not to mess thing up. Don’t perform things by yourselves, stick to the steps from below.

How to Update Motorola Droid 4 to Official Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OS

  1. Download the update file from here.
  2. Save the file on your computer first.
  3. Then, connect the smartphone with the computer via USB cable.
  4. Select the downloaded file and copy-paste it from the computer to your phone’s SD card.
  5. Unplug the USB cable; we are done using the computer.
  6. Turn off the phone as you need to boot into recovery mode.
  7. On the Motorola Droid 4 the recovery mode can be reached by: press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons together until the selection menu shows up. From there select “recovery”; when the green Android with a triangle is displayed on the screen press both Volume Up and Volume Down buttons.
  8. The recovery mode menu will be displayed.
  9. By using the same select “wipe cache”.
  10. Return to the main menu and select “install/apply update from external sdcard/storage”.
  11. Pick the update file from the SD card and the installation procedure will begin (relax as the process will take a few minutes).
  12. In the end, your handset will boot into Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
You can activate the root access now, by using the same OTA RootKeeper tool. Just run the app and select “restore”. Also, you can use our “how to root” guide for applying a one click method that will easily unchain the system of your handset.
Anyway, that was all for now. Remember that this is still the test version of the official Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS that will be made available for your Motorola Droid 4. So, test the firmware and return here for sharing your experience with us and with other users who might want to apply the step from below for updating their handsets to Jelly Bean 4.1.2.

I AM having an issue with this update. Sync in my Fusion will no longer recognize or download incoming text messages. And the keyboard seems inconsistent now too. Sometimes I have to hold the Shift key to access shift functions instead of tapping it once and then hit the key I need. For a desktop computer, holding shift isn't a big deal, but on my phone it's inconvenient.
Oh yeah, and I'm annoyed that I ONLY have an alarm now and not a timer also...
