Android 5.1.1 for Xperia Z

If you happen to own an older Xperia Z device, you would be glad to hear that the Android 5.1.1 update is now being pushed to users. According to the folks at Xperia Blog, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, Sony Xperia ZR, Sony Xperia Tablet Z (Wi-Fi and LTE) is now rolling out.
The same source also has information about the phone variants that are currently updated to 5.1.1. It appears that the update is up for grabs for the Xperia Z C6602 and C6603, Xperia ZL C6503 and C6506, Xperia ZR C5503, Xperia Tablet Z WiFi SGP311 and SGP312, and for Xperia Tablet Z WiFi+LTE SGP321. They also claim that the firmware has build number 10.7.A.0.222 and that it doesn’t include a patch for the Stagefright exploit.
As you may already know the the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, Sony Xperia ZR, Sony Xperia Tablet Z (Wi-Fi and LTE) is not a major update as its main feature is to address some bugs and to improve the overall system stability. However, since the users will be transitioning from Android 5.0 to Android 5.1, some new features should pop out here and there.
Just like any other software update, the new firmware is being rolled out gradually, which means that the ETA may vary with your phone model, region, and carrier. You know the drill! When the OTA update is pushed to your device, you should see a system update message in the notifications bar. All you need to do is tap on it and follow the on-screen instructions. If you can’t see the aforementioned notification you should also try checking for the update manually under Settings > About device > System updates > Check for update. It’s also worth mentioning that only the devices that run an official Android build are eligible to receive the update over-the-air. The update file could be quite big, that’s why it’s recommended to use a Wi-Fi connection while downloading it. Also, make sure that your battery is charged above 50%, so your phone won’t shut down during the installation.
After you receive the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, Sony Xperia ZR, Sony Xperia Tablet Z (Wi-Fi and LTE) on your device, you should be able to enjoy the 5.1-specific features such as improved heads-up notifications with the ability to swipe up to hide a notification without dismissing it or the new ‘Until next alarm’ feature available in Priority / None modes. The Android 5.1 update also comes with a slightly revised UI for the contacts app and more animations for the Clock app.
You probably know already that Lollipop was the biggest update Google’s mobile operating system received to date. One of the biggest changes was the Material Design UI which made everything more fluid and better-looking. The update also offered native 64-bit support and introduced Android Runtime (ART) for better in-app performance.
The Lollipop update also significantly tweaked the Notifications Panel and the Quick Settings section. The Heads-up notifications system was a Lollipop first, along with search functionality within the Settings app.
The update came with a redesigned Recents section which now has a card-based interface and document-centric multitasking. Multi-user support for phones was also offered for the first time in Android 5.0 Lollipop, along with Lock Screen Notifications. The latter feature also allows you to tweak the priority and privacy level on a per app basis.
Lollipop introduced Screen Pinning (you can lock your phone’s screen to a particular app), Smart Lock (tell your device to remove lock screen security when in a Trusted Place or connected to a Trusted Device), and enhanced battery statistics. The native Battery Saver Mode support was introduced for the first time in Lollipop.
What are you expecting from the the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, Sony Xperia ZR, Sony Xperia Tablet Z (Wi-Fi and LTE)? Any owners who received the update reading this? Have you noticed any improvements? Please let us know in comments.
